Star Trek Minimates Wave 3 - Ambassador Sarek and Dress Uniform Spock

Diamond Select Toys return to the Star Trek well for more Minimates, now shrunk to 2" and packed 2 figures to a set instead of their original 3" wave. We are now up to wave three, which is very much a Kirk and Spock-fest.

Packaging

Very much the same as before only this time the card colour is a nasty Greeny/Yellow/Mustardy type of shade. It really does look unpleasant, but I guess it stands out on the pegs. The figures are held in with twist-ties. easily viewable through the card blister.

The back of the card features portraits of all the figures in the wave, and the usual legal blurb and trademark indicia.

The Figures

Ambassador Sarek

He's the Daddy, well... He's Spock's Daddy.

Sarek is a Vulcan Ambassador to the United Federation of Planets. Unlike his son he's a full blooded Vulcan though it appears he regards Spook with a level of distaste. Most illogical.

I suppose an attempt has been made at capturing the likeness of Mark Lenard, and those formidable Vulcan eyebrows certainly help, but it can't do anything to lift what is surely one of the dullest Minimates ever. There's more attitude in a promotional blank than this guy.

Decoration on this Minimate is very minimal, although true to how Sarek appeared in the Original Series. It's just so dull, being black with some kind of multicoloured sash breaking up the expanse of black. His shoes are very shiny, though.

Sarek can't even be redeemed by having any cool accessories, as he doesn't come with anything at all. Not reaolly a surprise as it's hardly that he was an accessories kinda guy in Star Trek anyway.

In conclusion: A dreadful choice for a Star Trek Minimate. The line needed cool alien races for the Star Trek crew to fight (and Kirk to flirt with, if they were female), not Minimates like this.

Dress Uniform Spock

It's Spock, and he's dressed for dinner.

Another Spock. Whoopee! Three waves in and we're already up to four Spocks. That's just ridiculous. What makes it worse is that they're all from TOS, it wouldn't be so bad if DST were giving us some variety by giving us Spock from all the various movies, but no, they're concentrating on the Original Series and it's making for some dull waves of Minimates.

The head's the same as Spock from wave one. Exactly the same. That's just plain embarrassing for a figure which isn't a variant. The chest block features gold decoration on blue. The insignia on Spock's chest is very faithful to the actual costume insignia though lacks the finer detail. Not a criticism as such because it would take a lot of work to present all the detail in the badge.

The rest of the 'mate is standard Starfleet issue. There's nothing else of interest here as we have quite literally seen it all before.

Dress Uniform Spock is accessorised with a phaser and a communicator.

In Conclusion: zzzzzzzzzzzzz. Like Dress Uniform Kirk in this same wave, this really isn't an inspiring choice. It was bad enough getting these as variants, like McCoy in wave one, without clogging the waves with them. I understand you need the "headliners" to help sell a wave but this isn't the right way to go about it.
