Marvel Minimates 2003 Summer Conventions exclusive - Ultimate Spider-Man and Grey Hulk

Here we have a pack containing Ultimate Spider-Man and Grey Hulk, which was an exclusive to the US Summer Conventions Wizard World and Comic-Con.

Packaging

The packaging features the Spider-Man logo along the side of the card. The figures are packed in a bubble tray, and have twist-ties holding them in, as well as clear elastic bands holding their arms to their sides.

The figures look pretty good in the package, Spidey is nice and bright while the Hulk is obviously more muted.

The Figures

Ultimate Spider-Man

First up, we have another version of the wall-crawling Spider-Man. This is taken from his look in the Ultimate Spider-Man comics, although I've read the first couple of TPBs and he doesn't look as plain as this one.

First off, the whole costume has no web-lines drawn on, which makes him look a lot plainer and less visibly exciting. The eyes on the mask are very big, and do add a lot to the character of the figure.

The other big difference between the main version of Spidey's costume and this one are the spider-logos. This Ultimate version has different styles of logos. The paint apps are nicely done all over the figure, with no bleeding or rough edges, but as there is a lot less detail than the main version, that isn't really saying a lot. Additionally some of the parts are darker than others. This is most noticable on the forearms, which seem very dark red when compared to the brighter red of the hands.

Ultimate Spider-Man comes with no accessories.

Overall, this figure is an OK variant, but doesn't match up to the greatness of the original figure.

Grey Hulk

The second figure in the set is a grey version of the Hulk. When he first appeared in the comics, the Hulk was grey and was only later changed to green.

This figure is mostly very similar to the original green Hulk Minimate, certainly the feet, upper body, arms and crotch piece are all identical. This grey Hulk has a different, meaner, expression with gritted teeth. The most obvious addition is the hairpiece, which is really a forehead/hairpiece as it makes the head look a lot bigger and more Frankenstein like.

The detailing on the upper body is identical to that of the green Hulk, and it looks just as good on this one, maybe even better as it's picked out in a darker colour.. Interestingly, the rips on the ends of the trousers are different to the green Hulk, which struck me as odd.

Grey Hulk comes with no accessories, although the hairpiece is removable.

Overall, I like this Hulk more than the original, as the colours work better and the hairpiece makes him look a bit taller.
