Marvel Minimates Tower Exclusive - Clobberin' Time Thing and Super Skrull

Here we have a Tower exclusive pack containing the Super Skrull, an alien whose race is enemies with the Fantastic Four, and our second version of the Thing.

Packaging

The packaging is the now-usual Marvel Minimates box as seen in the last 3 waves. It features the Marvel Universe logo. It would have been nice if this pack could've come with a Fantastic Four logo instead. Come to think of it, the wave 5 Doctor Doom/Thing should have had one too. Would have tied in nicely for marketing for the film due out next year.

The figures are packed in a bubble tray, and have no twist-ties holding them in. Instead, a second clear tray piece fits over the top and then locks in, meaning that these figures are held in well and can be seen from each side.

The picture on the back of the packaging is the latest "group shot" one common to all the summer exclusives. There is a Tower Records logo on the back.

The Figures

Clobberin' Time Thing

The first figure in this set is a variant of the Thing from wave 5, this time in his blue Fantastic Four costume. He has a closed mouth, differenciating him from the first version. It is set in a determined expression. To add to the look, he has the same brow piece and rocky detailing as the original. Overall the face looks great, I prefer it to the first one because it appears a touch less cartoony.

The big change to this figure is the addition of the costume, and luckily for us it looks excellent. The same rocky texturing is evident, but mainly covered up in a very well-done costume. The muscular detailing through the shirt is good, on both the front and back. In a nice touch, the straps of the shirt go over the top of the torso block and meet up on the other side, which is something that could've been missed. The lower torso is similarly well done, especially the white booties. The white paint apps - in fact, all the paint apps and detailing - are perfect.

Clobberin' Time Thing comes with one of the smallest ever accessories, a tiny cigar. One of his hands is molded with a hole in which allows him to hold it. Like the other summer exclusives, he has the C3 feet which still haven't made it into the main Marvel line yet.

Overall, Clobberin' Time Thing is an improvement on the already-solid original. It's almost a shame it's an exclusive, but knowing AA's policy on these things, I wouldn't be surprised to see it in a regular release further down the line.

Super Skrull

The second figure in the set is the Super Skrull. The Skrull are a shape-changing alien race that have clashed with the heroes of the Marvel universe on many occassions, especially the Fantastic Four. Consequently a "Super Skrull" was engineered so that he had all of the powers of the Fantastic Four, and that's what is represented in this Minimate. The head looks similar to the Green Goblin, with the ears and the "cap", but the face is reptillian and drawn in a toothy snarl. The blank white eyes add an air of menace.

The costume Super Skrull wears is two shades of purple. Nice detailing on the front, the back has less. The Super Skrull also has a triangular collar which hardly restricts any of the articulation, a nice change from some of the more restrictive pieces.

The real attraction of the figure, though, is the way Super Skrull manifests the Fantastic Four's powers. Most noticible is the huge rocky hand - comprising the Thing's rocky strength and Mr Fantastic's stretching ability. This is about twice as large as the Thing's separate hand piece, and looks great with the engraved stony bits. The Super Skrull's feet and shins are translucent blue, a nod to the Invisible Woman's abilities. Long-time readers of this site know I'm a sucker for anything translucent, and I think these look good. Finally, the figure's right hand and forearm is red with yellow highlights, indicating that this hand has the powers of the Human Torch.

Super Skrull comes with one accessory - a translucent yellow fireball that fits over his right hand to further show the Super Skrull's mimicry of the Human Torch's powers. It's large - bigger than Iron Fist's pink chi energy ball - and the figure looks superb using it. As with all of the summer exclusives, Super Skrull also has C3 feet.

Overall, the Super Skrull is one of the most playable and fun Minimates available due to his features, and is another prominent villain to fight the ever-growing ranks of Minimate heroes.
