Marvel Minimates Wave 5 - Juggernaut and Civilian Logan

Here we have a pack containing two X-Men characters - The unstoppable Juggernaut and the 4th new incarnation of Wolverine in Minimate form.

Packaging

Wave 4 was the first "proper" wave to feature the new, box-style Marvel Minimates packaging which now is an enclosed box with pictures of the Minimates in action poses, and Wave 5 continues this.

In a nice touch similar to the Giant-Size X-Men Boxset, pictures of the 2 Minimate's heads are on the side of the box.

The packaging is a smaller than the old carded 2-packs, and immeasurably cuter. Interestingly, these new boxes are also smaller than the Magneto and Professor X exclusive, too. The Minimates information page has been updated with comparison shots of all 3 types of packaging used for the 2-packs, as well as with a new shot of the back of the box, which now shows a selection of characters both old, new and upcoming.

The figures are packed in a bubble tray, and have no twist-ties holding them in. Instead, a second clear tray piece fits over the top and then locks in, meaning that these figures are held in well and can be seen from each side.

The Figures

Juggernaut

The first figure in this set is Juggernaut, one of the X-Men's many foes. The main focus of the figure is Juggernaut's helmet, which protects him from telepathic attacks. The helmet has been done well, and really looks bulky compared to some of the other Minimate masks. One reason is due to it's thickness - this isn't something that can fit into the Minimate hands unlike Darevevil's cowl for example. The sculpted detail like rivets also add to the overall effect very well, but sadly the helmet still doesn't seem bulky enough. The source material shows Juggernaut to possess a very wide helmet (and body), but this one seems too thin.

The helmet is removable, and the figure comes with something that Minimate fans have been crying out for with Minimates that have masks - yes, Juggernaut comes with a hairpice for when the helmet is removed, meaning he can have a fine head of hair and not be a baldie. The hairpiece is a great addition, implemented as well as any of the other Minimate hairpieces, and is something that I hope AA/DST retain in future figure releases. The expression on the face is evil and scowling, and is up there with the better cartoony expressions.

The paint apps on this figure are muted and simple, but have been put on very cleanly, and there is no bleed between the skin tones and the brown costume. Much like the Thing, Juggernaut has a set of unique hands, which emphasise the Crimson Bands he wears.

Overall, Juggernaut is a good Minimate representation, and the inclusion of the extra hairpiece is welcome, but I'm slightly put off by the fact he is unfortunately one of those Minimates who is really hampered by being the same size as everyone else.

Civilian Logan

The second figure in the set is yet another Wolverine. This is the 4th version of him done in Minimate style, with another on the way in wave 6. The one thing you can say about all these Wolverines is that they don't look the same, unlike the myriad Spideys in this line. Each version of Wolverine brings something new to the table, and this one is no exception. The first thing that strikes you about this Civilian Logan figure is the snarl. The expression on his face is one of pure feral hostility, unlike anything we've seen on the other Wolverines. To top off the face, we get a really fantastic hairpiece which has Wolverine's uniquely pointed hair pushed back and out, giving him a more fearsome 'do than ever.

As the name suggests, Civilian Logan isn't in uniform. He has a T-Shirt on, revealing his dog-tags (an important item in the X-Men movie) and his hairy arms, chest and back. The paint apps are very good, the skin tones are perfect with no bleed, and the detailing for the hair works really well. The lower torso is mainly comprised of a flat, dull grey, but it works. Overall the look is simple yet clean and very effective.

Logan comes with his signature adamantium claws. Like the Wolverine in the Giant X-Men set, the claws weren't as bent out of shape as earlier Wolverine releases. Maybe the tray is holding them in better than the earlier carded releases.

Overall, Civilian Logan is a very well-done Minimate. You could dismiss it as "yet another Wolverine", but the details are spot on and really add to the figure's personality. Even if you have the other 3, this one is well worth a place in your collection.
